Here is the moment an explosive device in a trash can blew up near a New Jersey train station early Monday.
The blast erupted around 12:30 a.m. nearby the Elizabeth train station as a bomb squad from the FBI was using a robot to deactivate one of five separate devices discovered in the same backpack, Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said.
The bomb robot was “cutting wires” on the device to disable it when it inadvertently went off. There were no reported injuries as a result of the explosion.
Authorities mobilized after the suspicious device was found in a trash can on North Broad Street and Julian Place by two men hours earlier, around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
The men notified authorities after noticing wires and a pipe coming out of the bag.
Bollwage said to expect more detonations.
